Welcome to the School of Media and Design
The School of Media and Design (SMD) at the University of the Incarnate Word is where the future graphic designers, interior designers, game designers and journalists – to name a few – prepare for meaningful careers of impact.
Located in San Antonio, SMD is readying exceptional professionals for careers that move industries forward throughout South Texas and around the world. SMD is home to UIW's media and design degree programs that span five departments, including 3D Animation and Game Design, Communication Arts, Fashion Management, Graphic Design and Interior Design.
Through a rigorous curriculum taught by faculty who are leading designers, animators, communicators and experts in their fields, students are prepared for futures of innovation, creativity and discovery. In addition to the comprehensive undergraduate and graduate degree programs, students engage in a wide range of practical application and research opportunities in fields from the motion capture animation, to broadcast, to garment design and fashion show production, to name a very few.
With technology fluency and mastery at the center of much of SMD’s work, students can expect to work in advanced computer labs, fully functioning recording studios, or 3D print labs. They will gain hands-on practical experience using any number of industry-standard computer programs and digital tools. Students also work closely with faculty to develop professional pieces, such as portfolios and sample work that can be shown to prospective employers.
During the final years of study, students will show practical application and participate in ongoing research through practicums and internships that pair students with real-world businesses and professionals.
Throughout their years at UIW, SMD students also enjoy a full and active student life. Student organizations, clubs and travel opportunities provide a well-rounded university experience and an opportunity to form friendships and professional networks that benefit them now and well into the future.
